Voluntary National Reviews

As part of the follow-up and review process for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, Member States are encouraged to “conduct regular and inclusive reviews of progress at the national and subnational levels, which are country led and country driven” (paragraph 79). These national reviews are conducted annually during the HLPF under the auspices of ECOSOC.

Paragraph 84 of the 2030 Agenda specifies that HLPF’s regular reviews should be voluntary, state-led, undertaken by both developed and developing countries, and involve multiple stakeholders. The voluntary national reviews (VNRs) aim to facilitate the exchange of experiences, including successes, challenges and lessons learned, to accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. Additionally, VNRs aim to enhance government policies and institutions and to foster multistakeholder support and partnerships for implementing the SDGs.

This year, thirty-seven (37) countries will present VNRs on the 2030 Agenda’s implementation.
